July 2025 - Two Alphorns

About the Image(s)

I took this when I want early for a photo tour in the Palouse in 2014! I was in luck because it was Street Music Week in Spokane. I was interviewed by the newspaper reported who was part of the music week. I wandered around Spokane photographing musicians as they entertained the city. It is a wonderful program that raises money for a local food bank and has been replicated in other cities. I heard the alphorns from a distance and went towards the sound. I used an Olympus EM5 with a 14-150 mm lens at 44mm, SS was 1/200, aperture f 9 and ISO was 1250--and I have no memory why it was so high. It was fun documenting the event and hearing music.

Thanks for sharing. I'm sure many people have never seen these instruments. The image tells a story and you have great memories from your trip. Image also has a great leading line and shows the difference between the two instruments.   Posted: 07/04/2025 00:18:22

Hi Judy, It works well as a documentary travel shot. They were really inconsiderate leaving their bags lying around in shot. I do find the reflections in the window a little distracting, but obviously there was little you could do about that. I looked at cropping but actually like them being tied to the building, putting it into context.   Posted: 07/06/2025 10:44:04

I agree with Tim, and with several of his comments. The music stands also detract. Good documentary image and memories of the trip. It's not a PSA entry and nothing wrong with that. We take images for many reasons and this circumstance is interesting. Period.   Posted: 07/06/2025 17:00:43

We shall see. I think I will try it in street category that is a better fit than an open category. I'll let you knom. I do want to know how you like the photos apps.   Posted: 07/07/2025 18:08:57

Sorry, Judy. They are on the phone, but with flower season in full bloom, I've not taken any time to use them. Thanks for reminding me.   Posted: 07/10/2025 22:08:46

The lights inside the building are distracting for me. I wonder if a different angle would have eliminated the building. Still a fun shot.   Posted: 07/07/2025 12:57:31

I can probably correct the lights. I wanted the horns at an angle which meant shooting from where I did.   Posted: 07/07/2025 18:10:16

This image absolutely delighted me as I have and play a Swiss Alphorn. I have attended an alphorn festival in Leavenworth, WA as a player. Alphorn photos are hard to take because the horns are so long (12 ft.) that it is hard to get a nice close-up image of the player. Sometimes an angle works well. I'm glad you enjoyed the sound as it is definitely unique.   Posted: 07/07/2025 15:59:30

Karen,

I told Bob that this one was for you. I remembered you played the alphorn. I love the sound and I think I mentioned years ago that my daughter wanted to play one when she was very young! I have recordings with alphorn music. A college friend has relatives in Germany who are in an alphorn group.   Posted: 07/07/2025 18:07:16

You did indeed let me know. It is hard to believe I remember anything these days, but I rememberr this discussion from years past.   Posted: 07/08/2025 23:38:18

Hi Judy, I'm suffering from Burr-itis and am having laptop problems. This is a classic Judy Travel image and I appreciate them all. Did you make a B&W too? It might bring out the window people to your advantage.   Posted: 07/08/2025 23:42:25

Bob, I almost always make a monochrome image when I process the color. As an OLD darkroom person, I love monochrome and use it a lot.   Posted: 07/09/2025 17:37:04
