Drifters by Tim Sanders

July 2025 - Drifters

About the Image(s)

Taken at a Drifting Race a couple of weeks ago.
Lots of burning rubber and smoke.

Nikon D850 1/1600 at f8, ISO 720, 300mm lens.
Handheld.
Straight processed for PJD with sharpen and denoise in Topaz.
I would be grateful for any suggestions on how to make it better for PIDC or PIDM.

Hi Tim
New to the group and not familiar with photojournalism rules or requirements. Like the action in your photo, sharpness and color. I did crop out the bleachers in the background which I think brings more visual impact to the action of the race cars. What do you think?   Posted: 07/04/2025 00:03:18

Hi Kathy, welcome to the group. Thanks for your suggestion and I agree filling the frame does give it more visual impact.   Posted: 07/06/2025 10:21:08

Love the colors and the action. I prefer the original crop as it adds context. Having all the smoke seems more dramatic.   Posted: 07/07/2025 12:53:04

I prefer the original crop also. I think the bleachers and people give meaning to the photo. The cars are nice and sharp and the colors are great.   Posted: 07/07/2025 15:46:36

Hi Tom, Sorry I'm late making comments, but my new lightweight laptop doesn't like me. I'm not a PJ image maker, but I love your subtle use of a diagonal to promote the action. Your use of a diagonal level between cars adds a level of sophistication and creativity the image, making it more engaging and captivating. I'm also not a racing fan, but the cyan(ish) cast to the smoke bothers me. It may be from the gasoline fuel, but, it may be realistic but seems a lot on the cyan side of blue/green color. I used the LR Color Picker to add more blue. The crowd is a plus in my opinion, and gives good balance/depth.   Posted: 07/08/2025 23:28:52

Hi Bob, I had to go back to the RAW file to look at color cast, and it does not seem as pronounced until I cropped the image, but there are a lot of fumes in there and when developing it the foliage seems to leak through a bit, but is pretty much as it occurred. I shall try it as a mono next.   Posted: 07/18/2025 15:55:14

Judy always make a mono copy too, so I think it is a good idea.   Posted: 07/18/2025 16:00:30

Nice action shot, Tim. I like having the crowd in the background and thinks that makes a better PJ shot--adding the human element. I am not a PJ expert and got credit for published photos or I wouldn't have gotten to 5 stars. The angle of the cars is a plus as is the color. Well done.

Thanks Judy, you must have done well to get to five stars even with publishing credits.   Posted: 07/18/2025 15:57:22

Hi Tim. You've done an outstanding job of capturing the race as it happens with the cars coming out of the turn at an angle that reinforces your choice of shooting location and capturing the smoke/dust hiding most of the crowd in the background. Time, I won't change a thing except to add to my "best of" collection. Wonderful job.   Posted: 07/10/2025 22:00:03

Thanks Bob, I was trying to put in something different this month, but then was disappointed to see I don't shoot much else.   Posted: 07/18/2025 15:58:30
