Going West by Karen Harris

July 2025 - Going West

About the Image(s)

I was at Hilton Head, South Carolina just last week and caught this image at Savannah Pines Wildlife Refuge. I got better pictures of the whole head, but I kind of liked this one where it's hard to figure out which way he is going. He is swimming west.

He looks mysterious, out alone in his travels! I really like the blue color of the water around him. You can see clear through and also see the reflection of his eye. Great color, sharpness and definition. Wish he had a catch light in his eye or maybe there is one but it needs to be a little sharper.   Posted: 07/04/2025 00:47:02

Hi Karen, I really like the minimalist presentation. Personally I would have used the rule of thirds with a crop with the lower third line running horizontally through the eye.   Posted: 07/06/2025 10:51:02

Karen, I agree with your thinking about the blue water and your composition gives great depth of field but I think I would crop down and up leaving the crocodile to mark the 1/3 third line up from the bottom.   Posted: 07/06/2025 17:13:36

Minimalist and mysterious. I agree that it could be cropped. Otherwise good image, but you might have been closer than I would want to be!   Posted: 07/07/2025 13:01:29

Hi Karen. I haven't been to Florida since my dad died, but I looked at all of my gator shots, and I have none this good. I agree some crop from the bottom would make it appear bigger and more manacing if possible, but I know their eyes are always a deadly black. Probably why they are prehistoric. It looks like a croc to me, but it is hard to tell how pointed the nose is. Great image.   Posted: 07/08/2025 23:50:15

Karen, I like this view of the gator and agree on cropping the image. I never thought about alligators being in SC.   Posted: 07/09/2025 17:40:14
