March 2025 - Chatting By Art Scene

About the Image(s)

I took this when the PSA conference was in Rapid City, SD. I had read about the art place in the PSA Journal so we made a point to check it out. There were few people around so I was glad to catch this pair in conversation by the steps. I used an Olympus EM5 Mark II and 12-100mm lens. SS was 1/50, aperture f 8 and ISO 800. Most of the painting was abstract and didn't make good photos by themselves.

An interesting image - I like how you captured the 2 people having a conversation and the half smile on the woman's face. The artistic background also works for me.   Posted: 03/08/2025 12:02:18

A great image capture Judy. I like the vibrant colors of the image and the positioning of the people. Judy, I wonder if you would approve of a crop on the left side removing the lighter colors that do not add to the image. My eye keeps wandering to the light area and leaving the frame. If you didn't want to delete the word Love, I understand but think that is too small to worthy saying in the frame.   Posted: 03/09/2025 13:25:36

Thanks, Bob. I agree about the crop. I will revise before submitting it to an exhibition.   Posted: 03/19/2025 17:01:33

I love this image. I wouldn't change anything except a slight crop.   Posted: 03/11/2025 13:44:18

I agree with the crop on the left and think I have already done that and sent the wrong version.   Posted: 03/19/2025 16:57:51

I am happy to be back Judy.

As always, your images are sharp and edited properly. The color, exposure and White Balance are all good and the color vibrant as Bob Legg stated. The composition is for a proper travel image, but I find it too busy for my taste. There are just too many elements for me to look at and the overall tone is flat, being mostly midtones with no color separation.
I am, increasingly, becoming an advocate of adding depth to images using more blur and tonal range (Dodging and Burning.)   Posted: 03/13/2025 13:23:10

Welcome back, Bob! I think I would have to use Gigapixel to use your crop. It doesn't look sharp to me. It does make it a different picture.   Posted: 03/19/2025 16:59:06

Thanks, Judy. It isn't sharp as I am working from the 1200 mp jpeg, not a raw file. It does create a different image, and not one that you would particularly like.

I made you a tone evaluation image copy. White draws the eye, black blocks the eye and gray are the midtones. I was wrong that it is mostly midtones, as there are mostly highlights. The alley does allow the eye to travel around to the bright dancing scene on the left.   Posted: 03/20/2025 15:16:51

Hi Judy a great street scene, I think Karen's crop works well.I would try a B/W version, but not sure I would want to give up those wonderful colors.   Posted: 03/14/2025 08:23:54

Thanks. I almost always make a monochrome version when I process and I submitted the image to my monochrome group and it will be interesting to see that they have to say.   Posted: 03/19/2025 17:00:33

Nice capture. The two people make the shot work, especially with the red shirt. I like Karen's crop to get rid of the slight distractions along both sides.   Posted: 03/25/2025 15:12:49
