Thibeau Spits by Steve Long

October 2026 - Thibeau Spits

About the Image(s)

I was able to attend the Masters Horse Show at Spruce Meadows, Calgary this month. Our seats were in the middle section, so we had a great view, but not good for photography. I spent much of the competition hanging out along the rail to get a better angle to photograph from. I was among the professional photographers, but fortunately no one asked to see my credentials. I struck up a conversation with a pro who was shooting for Rolex. A great deal of photography is access. I never know when I attend various horse shows what restrictions that are placed on amateur photographers.

This is Thibeau Spits of Belgium, is only 25 years old, but rides with style and confidence of someone with many more years of experience. I liked this angle, setting up the Rolex logo with flags behind the rider. Settings: 1/640 sec f4.5 ISO 500

Great photo, you caught the Jump perfectly and the expression of the rider. I also like that you caught the row of flags at the top. Spruce Meadows is a wonderful venue for internation competitions   Posted: 10/07/2026 18:44:10

Yes it is! This was my first time there. We usually go to WEC in Ocala FL.   Posted: 10/08/2026 01:15:11

Super, Steve! Nicely composed and surely a decisive moment. The great focus on a strong subject gives it a lot of impact. Interesting to hear about the pros.   Posted: 10/07/2026 21:10:51
