Bisti Wilderness by Steve Long

December 2025 - Bisti Wilderness

About the Image(s)

This image is from my recent works-on with NPAN in the Bisti Wilderness area in New Mexico. This was taken at Shiprock. The slope of the horizon is going down from left to right. We were treated to the aurora that night, my first ever! In post processing, I use LRc denoise, and used masking to bring down the city light pollution and to enhance the sky and the rock face.

Nice work Steve...I like how you have enhanced the light on the rock face, drawing my eye in. Auroras are certainly an amazing sight.   Posted: 12/03/2025 06:18:47

Beautiful capture of the aurora Steve. This has been an active year for them and they are magical to see. Well done!   Posted: 12/04/2025 17:52:08

Wow... just wow! I've never seen the aurora. What an incredible gradation of color into the black of the 'normal' night sky with the stars visible in both. It looks like a painting. Makes me wonder what kind of exposure to keep the stars pinpoint?

As the newbie, I'm looking at files sizes for you all. All save for me under 1 MB but Steve rocks on making his jpg open at over 100 MB! Big difference in how it looks in close up view. I think some trade off in detail though when viewed at 100%. Just interesting how that works!   Posted: 12/12/2025 21:40:55

I love to photograph the auroras. It is such a magical experience! I wonder if you lighten the foreground just a bit it would emphasize the sky more. Well done   Posted: 12/17/2025 18:48:12
