Sid Vicious by Bollin Millner

July 2024 - Sid Vicious

About the Image(s)

Happy 4th of July!

I wanted to let you know that my solo show opened last Friday at Art Works in Richmond, Va. You can learn more about it and the other folks who are having shows currently at this link: https://artworksrva.com/current-year-june-exhibits/

And here is my photo for the month, entitled "Sid Vicious"

24mm, f2.8, 1/800

I cropped it to be square, converted to B & W (really didn't like it in color), and then "solarized" it.
It was taken in front of the historic Byrd Theater in Richmond, Va, on Cary Street.

Congratulations on your exhibit - I like the variety of topics and presentations.

Very interesting photo. It sent me to review that part of our collective musical history. I agree that presenting the photo in black and white is much more in character. And the solarizing technique adds that chilling eerie touch that is quite in sync with the subject. That's a new technique for me. You've used it before: how does it work, and is it part of Photoshop or . . . ?

I did notice what appears to be an errant white thread on the skirt.   Posted: 07/05/2024 03:52:55

Oh...and solarization was originally created by exposing a developing negative to light. The effect is mimicked by using the tone curve in lightroom. This article is helpful: https://www.all-about-photo.com/photo-articles/photo-article/823/how-to-create-a-solarization-effect-using-lightroom-or-photoshop

And by the way, I love All About Photo...one of the best photo sites I've found. It highlights different artists and also talks about technical stuff. https://www.all-about-photo.com/   Posted: 07/05/2024 21:21:49

Hi Bollin, I love blank and white photos! It really hone in on the subjects without the distracting colors. Thank you for sharing the resource on photo techniques and the solarization technique, I learned something new today.

I like the angle of the shot too, the leading line and how it guides the audience's eyes.   Posted: 07/19/2024 05:54:02

I like the solarization effect and the change to BW adds a nice effect. As Jennie points out the angle of the shot also adds interest. My only nit is you cut off the ladies feet.   Posted: 07/22/2024 15:30:06

I am not sure about having the two sets of feet and unfortunately...I went back and checked...the original shot did not include them. Darn! I take your point and would have liked to experiment.   Posted: 07/22/2024 20:48:07
