Sunning on a Fall Day by Eric Schweitzer

April 2026 - Sunning on a Fall Day

About the Image(s)

The C&O Canal NP runs along the Potomac River for 185 miles from Washington DC to Cumberland MD. While the canal is overgrown in spots, the towpath is maintained for the whole length of the canal. It is popular as a recreation spot and has many different types of wildlife calling it home. One that is very common are the turtles who like to sun themselves on the logs/branches which have fallen into the canal. It is not uncommon to see up to 10 lined up on a log.

I found this guy last November while walking the towpath. He is more animated than most turtles (who mainly sleep) and really seems to be enjoying himself. I took the shot handheld with my Sony 7M4 mirrorless camera with a 24-105mm lens. Settings f10 @ 1/125 sec, lens at 105mm and ISO 400.

I edited it in Lightroom and Photoshop. I did my basic corrections in Lightroom. This included selection of a profile, white balance adjustment, noise removal, sharpening, adjust exposure, contrast, tones, and texture. I also cropped the image. In Photoshop I removed some distractions and saved for the web.

Great diagonal composition, in my opinion. I am intrigued by the difference in the water above the branch and below it. And the turtle itself is beautiful.   Posted: 04/01/2026 12:37:29

I love a good turtle shot. I can almost feel it trying to capture the last bit of warmth from the sun before the winter.   Posted: 04/11/2026 11:27:43

Eric, the flowing water, showing the log which is now a dam holding back the the stagnant water with the leaves; and to top it all off is the colorful turtle. Beautiful image.

All the photographic qualities are great, but what sets this one apart for me is that it seems to capture the personality of the turtle, as if he's saying "Come no closer. This is my world and YOU wouldn't improve it!"

I hadn't clocked in the contrast between the water above and below the log that Ruth pointed out, but that is another story you captured. Nice work!   Posted: 04/12/2026 19:10:24
