Mono Portrait by Brian Parkin, QPSA

April 2026 - Mono Portrait

About the Image(s)

I always like mono for portraits with a shallow depth of field. I shot this in a studio, with just a single softbox. As there was a lot of daylight entering the studio the strobe had to be quite bright, so to use a wider aperture (f/4.5) I had to stick a neutral-density filter on the lens (my preferred 85mm lens in this case).

Standard post-processing - remove a few blemishes, and convert to mono in Affinity Photo. I'm quite pleased with the result - it looks how I wanted it to look!

Another stellar portrait. I would not change a thing.Well played with the filter in order to use the wider aperture. That was a thoughtful response to a lighting challenge.   Posted: 04/01/2026 12:42:36

Brian, this is a beautiful portrait which shows that you put a lot of thought in creating it.   Posted: 04/12/2026 16:07:32

I have never tried portraiture, but you certainly have a wealth of talent and expertise in the field. I always enjoy seeing what you do and how you accomplish it.

In this case I especially like the way the background blends into our surround giving the impression she is in endless space.   Posted: 04/12/2026 18:51:53
