Little Leaf in Winter Clothing by Audrey Waitkus

December 2025 - Little Leaf in Winter Clothing

About the Image(s)

After the recent snowfall, I stumbled upon this leaf encrusted with ice on the otherwise bare ground. Things were just starting to melt so the ice crystals are not as distinct as I would have liked, but I grabbed my iPhone. Settings were 4.2mm, f/1.64, 1/121 sec. I went to Photoshop and cropped intentionally to center the leaf. Then I fiddled with the contrast, vibrance, and color balance to maximize the effect.

I see the attraction and I wonder what it would look like in black and white. A professional photographer friend of mine once looked at one of my photos and said, "Do you think the color adds anything? Try it in black and white." I did and she was right...it was a better photo that way. Worth trying here too, I think.   Posted: 12/12/2025 12:53:54

I tried it in black and white and it has a different feel when there are no distractions from the colors. See what you think.   Posted: 12/18/2025 02:31:11

Audrey, the subject shows that cold weather is here. The image is sharp, but I find the b/G is more interesting; the pebbles are have beautiful coloring.   Posted: 12/12/2025 17:00:43

Following your suggestion, I played with the background using selective color, and you are so right -- the pebbles are the real stars of the story. Check out the result.   Posted: 12/18/2025 02:33:24

Audrey, I like the color version. White is always a very hard color to work with (easily over exposed). The little peoples are definitely adds interest to the image.   Posted: 12/18/2025 06:15:39

I'm not sure that I knew what it was before reading your description!

I prefer it in colour - especially 'selective colour' version. Maybe a crop would be in order? To paraphrase Bollin's comment - do the areas at the top and bottom add anything?   Posted: 12/18/2025 11:01:30
