About the Image(s)

I live in a 1914 townhouse in the Museum District of Richmond, Va. It is currently being renovated to add some "age in place" features. This is a picture of the bathroom window with a view out at the house next door. It has been over a hundred years since what was behind the walls has been visible. 16 mm, f/4, 1/30. I converted to black and white, knocked back the highlights and brought out the shadows.

A good example of the fact that good pictures are everywhere, just waiting for a photographer to notice them, something I seldom do. For a monochrome picture, this has got it all - lines, textures, 50 shades of grey (that would make a good book title), patterns in the plaster and the brickwork, and a window to look through.

Don't renovate your house - leave it as is, and charge local photographers a fortune to shoot in it!   Posted: 01/12/2025 11:46:16

Thank you so much for the comments. I don't know that I could live long term without that bathroom...but in the interim...perhaps I can recoup some of the costs of the reno by charging photographers :)?   Posted: 01/12/2025 15:13:58

Bollin, A thoughtful image. B/W is a great choice for this. Good detail and shadows.   Posted: 01/14/2025 17:21:28

The brick wall is what draws the viewer into the picture, but then there is so much to see. The wall has had a long and interesting history from the many textures and layers. Almost sad to have to cover it all up again.   Posted: 01/15/2025 01:40:53

Good composition and tonal quality. This is definitely a B&W image. As refinements I would crop out the whit plastic pipe along the left side to keep the historical feel an brighten the textures on the walls. I think the add to the depth of the image.   Posted: 01/16/2025 02:00:53

Yeah...I wondered about that pipe too. I didn't want to crop that much off the image though. So...as an experiment I removed the pipe and then did a bit of a crop, plus some brightening as you suggested. Here is the result. Still not sure though...part of why I kept the pipe is it adds to the story...this old house that is still getting updates. I'd be interested in which image the group prefers.   Posted: 01/16/2025 02:21:20
