This site is on the side of I-64 in the City of Richmond. I saw it whilst driving by. I went on an excursion and tried to photograph it from the street, outside the gate, but got nothing of interest. I went back later on, realizing that if I could find a perch on the other side of the freeway, I might be able to get an interesting shot. I was able to find a spot at the exit ramp opposite the site. I went in the afternoon and from the south side of the freeway and shooting north, with the sun at my back, I got the light I wanted. The problem was the constant flow of traffic (the highway is just below this crop). Eventually I just started using bursts. At any rate, I cropped it to a 1:3 ratio. I am attracted to this because of the abstract quality of the scene.

Very abstract - it's very difficult to see the scale of the image, and so difficult to see exactly what it is - which is good, as it encourages the viewer to keep looking. The light is perfect for this type of shot in my opinion. I like the fencing at the bottom, which seems to ground the image, and the thin horizontal wires seem to add something - sort of holding the image together in my mind.
Great image.
I've often thought of photographing in a scrap yard - maybe I'll have a go some time   Posted: 12/05/2024 10:56:07

Thank you Brian. It is difficult to discern the size. I considered including more in the shot to define that a bit, but decided not to...keep it ambiguous. BTW it is huge. And right on the interstate. I had to time it just right to not get lorries in the frame. I had determined the time of day to take the shot. I was shooting north east more or less and waited until fairly late in the day so the sun was at my back. At any rate, I hope you'll give a scrap yard a go. I'd love to see the results.   Posted: 12/05/2024 14:29:07

Very abstract is also my first impression. The brown fence border (?) at the bottom and the faint white wires/lines definitely adds some interest and mystery to the picture. Very daring (bold) attempt to photograph an unusual subject. After looking at the picture more closely, it is actually an interesting piece of art - there are so many little details and it is like reading a complex mystery novel with so many chapters inside a book. Thank you for sharing the picture and Happy Holidays!   Posted: 12/15/2024 06:41:15

Great abstract image. While it is not clear what it is that does not matter. There are enough different segments to keep one's eye wandering from one part to the other. I also like the allusion of 2 different photos between the left and right sides which looks to be caused by the placement of the scrap and the reflection of the light.   Posted: 12/18/2024 17:41:31
