Duck Creek, NC by Bollin Millner

November 2024 - Duck Creek, NC

About the Image(s)

I recently took a trip through Eastern NC where I grew up. This photograph is on Duck Creek, just off the Pamlico River, not far from Bath, NC which is NC's oldest incorporated town. At this exact spot, many years ago, I encountered a guy who had caught a cottonmouth water moccasin. He was holding this large snake in his hand and using a screw driver to open the snake's mouth so we could see the "cotton." Wish I had a picture of that!

This space thus has sinister memories for me. I used the "solarizing" technique to express some of that. Converted to black and white as well. 16mm, f/11, 1/160

Bollin, beautiful image, with the calm water you have some great reflections. Good DOF Thanks for sharing your boy hood memories of this place.   Posted: 11/14/2024 16:07:25

Great composition, lighting, and conversion to B&W. The solarizing effect is also great. I would, however, add a small gray stroke to give it some definition on the top and bottom.   Posted: 11/18/2024 19:42:32

I think that the slightly blue tone really works with this image, giving it a foreboding feel, which the flat calm water and the bare tree trunks seem to agree. I feel cold just looking at it!   Posted: 11/22/2024 08:56:50

I agree with all the comments, especially the foreboding feel that the color lends to it. Following Eric's suggestion to add a small gray stroke, I took it into Photoshop and found, when I added a gray stroke, the color didn't even come close to blending with the color of the tones in the photo. So I played around with the stroke function until I found the color-picker and used the eyedropper to pick up a color from the photo. Then to illustrate it I added an black layer behind the photo so the stroke would be visible. I agree it definitely helps define the scene.
