About the Image(s)

This is the Hudsonian Whimbrel. They migrate through the low country of South Carolina feasting on the crabs that are down in the mud and around the oyster beds. They breed in the Arctic and migrate to South America. We are lucky to have them here for a short time each year. I went out with a local photographer in his boat at low tide to capture these birds as their nesting and feeding locations are remote and some locations are protected. It was a great experience. This whimbrel is covered in pluff mud as he has been digging with his long bill to get the crabs down in the mud
