Rainbow Promise captured 8/26/25 during my 8-day commercial rafting trip on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. We had an epic monsoon thunder storm earlier and were treated to this beautiful rainbow at sunset.
Canon 5D Mark IV with Canon 24-70 lens. F10, 1/25 sec, ISO 400 @28 mm. I used Lightroom for editing.

A complex picture with brightly lit mountains, shadows near a river, and a full-color rainbow. It is very difficult to make sure that the shadows are not too dark and the bright areas do not turn white and the colors of the rainbow remain distinguishable.

Thanks Oleg! I did use quite a lot of masks in Lightroom to either lighten or darken areas as needed. I shoot in RAW which gives me more flexibility to make adjustments but I try not to go overboard.

Hey Jill, this one of those scenes that is difficult to capture on film (well not film but you know). In general I think rainbows are difficult and in this scene the very bright mountain on the right grabs the eye away from the subject rainbow. I like the composition with the river on the right and the sky is perfect but mountain is almost blown out in the original which makes it near impossible to get it right in post. This scene could have been improved if you used the exposure bracketing feature of the camera and you (actually the software) combines exposures in post; if you haven't used it before you should give it try, for certain scenes it really improves the dynamic range of the cam.
