Portugal Stairway by Jacqueline Murphy

July 2025 - Portugal Stairway

About the Image(s)

We have a local photo competition coming up I need August and this is one of the photos I am considering entering. It is a circular stairway (or oblong). I think it could be in the architecture or abstract category. Appreciate your comments for improvement.

Jacqueline hi!
I think 'abstract' is more suitable.
And, probably, little bit cropping?   Posted: 07/08/2025 14:00:20

Hi Jacqueline -

I love the colors in your shot and keep trying to determine how it's a staircase! I agree with Oleg that the abstract category would be more suitable.

I'd love to know where you found the staircase - it's quite interesting.

Good luck with the competition!!   Posted: 07/08/2025 19:38:31

Thanks Jill. The staircase is located in a hotel in Porto, Portugal. The hotel itself celebrates mid century's modern memorabilia.   Posted: 07/13/2025 02:49:08

Abstract, certainly. Very nice smooth lines and nice combination of tones. For me, there is too much dead space on the right. It's hard for me to imagine how you derived this image from a photo of a staircase, I kind of see it but not. Well done.   Posted: 07/09/2025 00:13:25

Thank you Richard. The stairway is lit up from top to bottom and the colors change so every picture is a little different as the colors change. I have cropped in on the right and bottom.   Posted: 07/13/2025 02:50:52

Abstract also. what processing did you use to get the effect? Great tones.   Posted: 07/12/2025 23:58:36

Thank you Marilyn. I use Light Room Classic for my post processing. I used the remove tool to take out a few imperfections in the drywall and reflections. I also used the mask/object select tool for the lower levels to lighten up the right corner/side. Overall I did increase the exposure to brighten up the entire image. Typically I start with auto correction and then adjust to my vision. Lastly, noise reduction.   Posted: 07/13/2025 02:58:14

I agree, abstract - this is really beautiful and very appealing to me. I like the geometric shape and love the muted colors. Good luck in the competition.   Posted: 07/13/2025 00:24:56
