About the Image(s)
One of my hobbies is playing Mah Jongg with my neighborhood friends. We had a theme of "Games" in my photography club and this was my entry. It has always been one of my favorite photos. I used the focus stacking feature in my Canon R7 and the tiles were placed on a black reflective board.

Julia - thanks for sharing your Mah Jongg hobby - I've played a few times and really enjoyed it. I'd like to know a bit more about focus stacking with the R7 and assume you used a tripod. Does the camera determine where to focus automatically in successive images?
I really love the reflections of the game pieces too. Thanks for sharing!   Posted: 03/12/2025 10:56:28

Jill, Yes, I used a tripod and a remote trigger. I set up the R7 to do focus stacking. You tell it how many images to create although if it needs less, it does less. The camera takes a series of photos with the focus point at all the different levels. The nice thing about the R7 is that it creates a .jpg of the combined images. It is suggested to create a separate folder on your camera for each series of photos. I also have the R5 and it doesn't create a .jpg - it just gives you the series of photos and you have to combine them in Photoshop or another program like Helicon. I took this on a black reflector board to get the reflections. Thanks for the compliments - this was a fun photo to do.   Posted: 03/27/2025 14:17:37
Julia - thanks for the information about your camera body, settings, and capability of the R5 vs R7. I'm a Canon shooter too and have been wondering about going mirrorless. The auto focus stacking is intriguing. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge of photography and using different set-ups in your submissions.   Posted: 03/27/2025 21:30:58
You did a great job with the reflection and placement of pieces. I like to encase my photos with a thin stroke but in this case I'm glad you didn't- the photo is perfect without. My game is chess, but I think your pieces are more interesting and colorful.   Posted: 03/17/2025 19:33:55
Thank you! I used to play chess, but love Mah Jongg once I discovered it - and yes, the tiles are more colorful.   Posted: 03/27/2025 14:20:08
The placement and reflections were well thought out. Well done. I would not change anything.   Posted: 03/21/2025 18:02:37

Very well done. If it were mine I think I might have put a subtle border around them, not a stark white, but maybe a light grey just to enclose them.. especially with black backgrounds. Not everyone likes borders though, but that's just my opinion... I love them...   Posted: 03/31/2025 16:08:02
