About the Image(s)
I attended a rodeo in Wickenburg, AZ recently and shot this rider just out of the chute. Of course, the background is messy but I thought the posture of the horse was good. I added a beach mask from Topaz Studio 2 which added an over abundance of light but I kept it slightly overexposed in spots to give it more detail. I also modified the brightness and contrast in Photoshop.

Great action and story-telling Al. However, the background is so busy and with the new Ps tools, you should be able to select the subject and sften the background very easily. I also think thet you need more space in front of the horse. Good job capturing all four hoofs off the ground.   Posted: 04/04/2026 21:34:35
I agree with Joe about darkening the background. It's so light and cluttered that it distracts from the horse and rider. I do like the processing. It reminds me of those old-fashioned cowboy and western style paintings and drawings from the 1940s and 50s. Very vintage looking.   Posted: 04/06/2026 19:08:57
I pretty much agree with Joe and Mike. I've been to many rodeos and I try to get more to the side so there is less clutter in the background. Getting elevation by shooting from the grandstands helps also. This is especially true when it comes to bull riding, because they don't stray that much from the chutes. Still, a nice action shot.   Posted: 04/07/2026 14:37:11
I think that the other cowboys help create this story. To me, they are more interesting than the normal rodeo background, which is usually an audience of some sort. So I would see how it looks to include some of them, and probably those that are in front of the horse and rider. Also, isn't that the shadow of the horse and rider on the ground? I guess, in other words, I'm suggesting a wider crop to include more of the atmosphere.

I agree with Peggy especially on the crop. To me, I'd like to see a little more area for the horse to move into and some way to include a few of the cowboys in the background. Nice capture on the action!   Posted: 04/16/2026 23:32:23
