For me, air shows are always an excellent source for photography, with all the dynamic action and bright color. I enjoy the challenge of capturing tight formation flying at high speed but at the same time I look for the not so usual images one can obtain by moving in close and narrowing the field of view. This particular picture was taken at the Homestead air show south of Miami and depicts one of the U S Air Force Thunderbirds departing the flight line and heading out to begin the demonstration. What I attempted here was to hone in on the pilot and remove from the original image elements that I thought were distracting; to emphasize the human aspect, so to speak, which is often missed from shooting half a mile away. Taken with my Nikon D500 with 70-300 mm lens and edited in first Camera Raw then finished up in Photoshop CS 5.

Great capture Jerry and especially at that speed. Good color and sharpness as well, however, the pilot mask disturbs me.   Posted: 04/04/2026 21:51:21

Thanks, but why does the mask bother you?   Posted: 04/04/2026 21:59:24

It's look is just disturbing to me. Just a personal thing I suppose.   Posted: 04/08/2026 18:57:51

Good composition. I suggest removing the reflection from the glass. Makes it hard to see the pilot.   Posted: 04/06/2026 19:05:54

If you're referring to the reflection in the canopy glass, to do a convincing job, that would be beyond my skill level.   Posted: 04/07/2026 14:43:12

I don't know if you use Lightroom but the latest version has a mask to remove reflections. I haven't tried it yet but if you have Lightroom you might see how it works.   Posted: 04/07/2026 16:48:44

Great job removing the extraneous material and concentrating on the canopy. I think I would have liked it if you had left in the air intake of the jet. Just to show a little more of the Thunderbird.   Posted: 04/07/2026 16:14:13

Yeah -- I had been going back and forth on that one...   Posted: 04/09/2026 21:55:31

I agree with Al about not such a tight crop so we could see more of the plane. Great job of sharpening and tightening up the lines.   Posted: 04/15/2026 16:41:41

I'm going to agree with Joe about the "mask". It looks to me like a "thumbs up" from the pilot but it's confusing. Interesting image though.   Posted: 04/16/2026 23:29:17
