July 2024 - Black & White

About the Image(s)

A shot taken along the Tiujana river South of San Diego. I used my Lumix G9 fitted with the Lumix Vario 100-300mm, excellent lens when mounted on a tripod; a focal of f/7,1; a 1/640 shutter speed; with a 200 ASA.

Well caught shot of the two different birds in a great position together in the frame. As usual, with the variation of colours, exposure is to some extent a compromise, and you have done well to keep problem to a minimum. There is still a slight bit of white-out to the front bird, which could perhaps be reduced a bit further?   Posted: 07/11/2024 07:52:55

That you managed to get them both in focus is masterful. I agree that the white bird is a bit blown out, but that's hard to fix. Water and reflection are nice. Mudflats an unfortunate fact of life.   Posted: 07/11/2024 15:11:08

Yes, Leslie and Mike, you are right. The white is a bit overblown but I prefer to leave it like it is because the sun shining on the white bird is not easy to correct the tone visually. The idea of going there could be nice and measure the color temperature but it is a bit complicated. You know what I mean. Thank you for the input. any way.   Posted: 07/12/2024 13:38:36

Well done, Gabriele. It is not easy to capture the dynamic range this image requires, and to get them sharp with the distances involved. Is this a raw capture? In Lightroom Classic you can set highlights to -100 and shadows to +100 to reduce the contrast level.   Posted: 07/17/2024 20:26:25
