Morning Dove by Jim Overfield

October 2026 - Morning Dove

About the Image(s)

I was standing on a small wood bridge looking west while patiently waiting to take photo’s of birds in flight. After a while, when not seeing any birds, my patience wore out and I prepared to leave. When I turned around to leave, I saw this morning dove sitting on the bridge rail watching me from behind. I got a few shots off before it flew away. Handheld full frame body with a 100-400mm lens set at 200mm, shutter speed 2500, f/5.0; ISO 640.

Such a great image of the Dove. The bokeh frames the subject well and the feather detail is perfectly focused. Your aperture selection gave a shallow depth of field and presented the Dove in its best light. The catch light is a bonus.   Posted: 10/01/2026 20:13:07

Lovely use of depth of field giving the soft background behind the bird. Beautiful detail in the feathers and good catch light in the eye. I like that the crop allows the dove room to move. Well done.   Posted: 10/01/2026 23:12:12

It is a lovely dove. Perfect lighting and focus. Nice muted background. Capturing the subtle colors around the eye is good and catch light a bonus.   Posted: 10/03/2026 04:14:30

It is a nice shot. Your settings were for a bird in flight. If you had tine a higher F stop and a slower shutter speed I think would have been better.   Posted: 10/03/2026 13:24:59

Jim, this is one of the best images of a dove I have ever seen. Great color, sharpness and definition. Background bokeh is perfect. Eyes and the feathers on the side of his body are outstanding. Being a purest I wish the dove was sitting on a branch or something other than the the piece of cut wood.   Posted: 10/03/2026 13:44:25
