Dovecote by Mike Cowdrey, MPSA

October 2026 - Dovecote

About the Image(s)

The Dovecote is owned by Trent Lock Inn and situated on the
path by the River Trent at Derbyshire UK.
Amazingly it is home to 40 or 50 doves, which spend the day
mostly foraging along the riverbank!

This is a great setting for capturing a bird in flight as well as three other Doves looking straight on. Your settings enhance the depth of field.   Posted: 10/01/2026 20:17:07

Amazing to get the full wing and tail spread on the top dove. The overall image feels a little over exposed to me. I feel you would get more detail in the feathers if it wasn't so bright - maybe adjust the brightness/contrast in processing. I do like the shadows on the dovecote itself, giving bands of light and dark to the structure. Looks like a good place to sit with the camera :)

Wow, that many doves in one of those dovecotes? Love the one flying. Agree it's a bit too bright and the greens a bit over the top. Do like the interaction between the residents. Nice to learn about these communal living arrangements.   Posted: 10/03/2026 04:21:52

Mike, this image has it all and really tells a story. You caught them nesting, stalking, inquisitive and getting ready to fly. It is perfectly cropped and very interesting. The background brightness really bothered me so I hope you don't mind that I reduced it.   Posted: 10/03/2026 13:30:38

The version by Tom is much better. I would also reduce the whites all the way.   Posted: 10/03/2026 13:34:36

I didn't notice this at first but I think the post that the dovecote is sitting on should have the same level of detail as the dovecote itself, otherwise it looks like it is floating in mid air. It feels like you have selected the background to edit and the select has grabbed the post as part of the background.   Posted: 10/03/2026 19:06:29
