About the Image(s)
I took this photo in Diyarbak, on the banks of the Tigris River. After a long struggle with other herons, this night heron landed on the rock and finally caught a fish.

Fantastic capture of the Black-Crowned Night Heron. The inclusion of the breaking water frames the story just right. As always, this species' red eyes are captivating. The Sony gear and settings has not failed you in getting a wonderful and interesting image. I think the Heron would have to find solid ground in order to feast on this large catch, or risk losing it.   Posted: 07/08/2026 14:53:44

Thank you very much Ted,
They usually eat the fish very quickly, right where they caught it. Catching the fish can take a long time. If you do not act quickly enough at the moment of the catch, you might sometimes miss the opportunity to take a photograph.   Posted: 07/11/2026 06:04:35

I didn't realize night herons were such adept fishers. To catch one, fish in beak, in a fast moving river is impressive. Even more impressive is your capture of the scene with such detail and color without any white blow-outs. Nice job.   Posted: 07/08/2026 19:47:23
In my opinion, the night heron is one of the most patient of all herons. It can stand motionless for hours.I think it was worth the wait. Thank you very much.   Posted: 07/11/2026 05:59:53
Veysi, what a gorgeous image! I guess Black-crowned Night Herons are found all over the world. I especially love the moment you captured with the heron catching a fish, it's a fantastic shot. In my experience, herons are usually not afraid of people and will stand perfectly still for long periods. Your heron is tack-sharp, and the background, which looks like a waterfall, is absolutely stunning. Beautiful work!   Posted: 07/09/2026 00:42:04
Thank you very much Tom.
In the area where I took the photograph, the river flows rapidly downwards from a height of about half a meter.
That is precisely why you get the feeling that there is a waterfall in the background.   Posted: 07/11/2026 05:57:40
