Night Heron Hiding in the Mangroves by Leslie Larson

July 2025 - Night Heron Hiding in the Mangroves

About the Image(s)

Slipping through a channel in the mangroves in Baja CA South, a night heron stared us down. It never flinched as we drifted by. The red eye caught my attention.

Leslie, this is an amazing capture of the birds face. The detail and color are great. The catchlight in the red and black areas of the eye bring life to this image and the small aperture setting creates a very nice starburst in the larger catchlight. The color and sharp detail in the eye is captivating. A stunning image. Great job!   Posted: 07/03/2025 11:59:48

Leslie, I certainly agree with everything that Jim said and I too think this is an amazing closeup of a night heron. The eye and fines detail of the head is superb. This image is a great example of the strength of simplicity and is very striking.   Posted: 07/04/2025 20:50:00

A terrific minimalist view of the night heron, really sharp, shows off detail in the feathers. Perhaps darken the brightness areas very slightly, would enhance the feather detail even more.   Posted: 07/15/2025 18:44:05

Wow, I love it. The detail is great, and tells us a lot about the bird. I can't fault it. Well done!   Posted: 07/17/2025 10:16:41
