Nearby Finch by Jim Overfield

July 2025 - Nearby Finch

About the Image(s)

While set-up to take photos of hummingbirds at a nearby feeder, I happened to see this finch in a nearby tree. I quickly got one shot off before it flew away.

Full frame camera body on a tripod with shuttler release cable, 300 mm lens, 1/1000 sec, f/4, ISO 400.

Jim, this image of a Finch is a picture perfect shot in every way. The bird, leaves and background are outstanding. Jim, wouldn't change a thing. Hang it on the wall.   Posted: 07/04/2025 16:34:53

Lovely goldfinch. Only suggestions I have is to lighten the very dark area above the eye so it doesn't blend in and somehow lessen the contrast on the left side of the bird. It appears in the selection to blur the background a slight black outline was left. Love the setting and leaves.   Posted: 07/08/2025 06:59:52

Thanks Leslie. I agree, adjusting the black area was a challenge for me. Just couldn't get it right.   Posted: 07/10/2025 15:04:03

Try a very small and sharp clone stamp along the edge to get rid of the black...either side, bird side or background side.   Posted: 07/24/2025 16:56:34

Thanks Leslie. I hadn't really noticed that black line until you mentioned it again. I played with this issued in photoshop using the green side, not very successfully. I will try the yellow side and see if that makes a difference. Thanks again for your second response.   Posted: 07/24/2025 21:00:18

Leslie, I gave it another go, this time with proper Clone settings. What do you think?   Posted: 07/24/2025 21:14:06

Nailed it!! You did a great job, I know it's tricky.   Posted: 07/24/2025 22:56:22

Beautiful bird and well composed. I would also lighten the eye and the dark area above the eye. The colors complement each other. The one small leaf on the left seems to attracts my eyes. Maybe you can blur it. Well done.   Posted: 07/13/2025 00:19:10

Thank you Marilyn, the blackest part of this image is the area you mentioned, just above the eye. I worked on that area for some time, always resulting in an unnatural look. I'll give another go at it. Now that I focused on that small leaf you refer to, it does look oversharpened. I will definitely work on this area. Thank you so much for your feedback Marilyn, very much appreciated.   Posted: 07/13/2025 20:59:54

Jim, I also worked on the area above the eye and also did not like the results. Perhaps someone else can suggest what to do?   Posted: 07/14/2025 00:46:22

Thanks for your efforts Marilyn. The problem is that the black area is over exposed and lacks any kind of detail. But, maybe someone else will be successful.   Posted: 07/15/2025 14:54:44

I agree with Leslie and Marilyn. I think slight lightening of the eye would help bring it out from the dark surrounding.   Posted: 07/15/2025 18:31:08

A striking bird, beautifully caught. I did see if I could do anything to lighten it's eye, but I was unsuccessful. Other than that it is a great shot!   Posted: 07/17/2025 10:00:50

This is a beautiful shot. I agree with lighten the eye if it still looks natural.   Posted: 07/27/2025 08:20:01
