Mallard Rising by Mike Cowdrey, MPSA

May 2025 - Mallard Rising

About the Image(s)

Taken guess where earlier this month. There is plenty of bird activity
at the moment, and I liked this capture as it rose from the lake.

Nikon D750, Sigma 150-500 (at 500), AP F9. ISO 1250.

No way this gorgeous Mallard was taken at Straw's Bridge Lake Mike. You are so lucky that such a huge variety of birds visit there. Normally I would try and shoot a duck coming at me but if you did you would loose all the colors. Love the blues, whites and orange. Very nice detail and caught at the perfect moment with the wings down. Nice work Mike.   Posted: 05/04/2025 00:32:18

Nice in flight capture Mike. Great color and sharp across the image, even with a little catch light and a few trailing drops of water. I like seeing the spread and color of the wing feathers. Nice image. I am curious what the shutter speed was for this shot.   Posted: 05/09/2025 21:03:12

I'm relatively new at taking photos of birds, and I always question whether I'm using the correct camera settings when taking shots. So I am impressed with the quality of your image with the camera settings you chose at the focal length used. Very nice.   Posted: 05/10/2025 09:29:51

Mike,

Great background highlighting the Mallard's flight. This definitely is competition worthy. Very sharp likeness   Posted: 05/12/2025 20:31:03

It's amazing to me how many different colors a male mallard's head can reflect. From your blue to sometimes emerald green or even black. Nice flight capture...good feather definition, focus throughout, and even got the orange feet. Good work.   Posted: 05/12/2025 21:36:21
