May 2025 - Mallard with Ducklings

While walking around the lake last spring, this Mallard duck would occasionally appear with its ducklings following close behind her. At some point, I sat to rest on a rock very close to the water when she suddenly appeared out of the weeds with her brood swimming towards me.
Global light, color and sharpness adjustments and cropped in Lightroom Classics. Full frame camera with 100-400mm lens set at 400mm, 1/4000 sec., f/5.6, ISO 1250, Shutter priority, spot metering.

Outstanding Mallard Hen and Duckling image Jim. Your low shooting angle really made it and am amazed that they all have catch lights. Tells a great story and the sharpness and definition is super. Thanks Tom. I was so focused on creating balance with the ducks head and water reflection when cropping during post processing that I simply overlooked balance of the overall image. Your rework of the photo definitely improves the photo. Thanks again Tom. Posted: 05/04/2025 12:18:18

AND for another great mallard shot. The ducklings are just too cute, and you managed to get all nine in focus. Reflections an added bonus. Smooth and ripples on the water really lovely contrast. I do like the water extension Tom put on. Posted: 05/12/2025 21:40:32
