Tundra Swans by Don Poulton

April 2025 - Tundra Swans

About the Image(s)

A couple of weeks ago, I went with a birding group in our camera club to a pond area in southern Ontario where Tundra Swans stop while on their long migration to the Arctic. I managed to capture a mother swan with its young nipping at her while shooting at 1/2500 and f/5.6, ISO 800 with my Canon 7D Mark II and 100-400mm lens plus 1.4x extender in hazy sun conditions. After the normal Lightroom adjustments, I took two versions of this image into Photoshop where I layered them and masked the head and neck of one onto the second one (in the first one the chick was less visible and in the second one the mother's head was turned away from me). I also cropped and sharpened the image to produce the final version. Enjoy.
