Dark Eyed Junco

On a camera club outing for bird photographers last fall, I captured action from this dark eyed junco as he landed on an impromptu feeder setup in a rural conservation area in southern Ontario.

I used my Canon 7D Mark II and 100-400 lens at 400mm, 1/3200 at f/6.3 and ISO 1600. I made standard adjustments in Lightroom including cropping, and used Topaz Denoise AI to remove noise associated with the high ISO.

Interesting, another junco (this one the slate variety). What an action shot! The wings are all over the place. I would clone out the seed bit by the right eye, it's distracting, and maybe dodge the eye a little on that side to bring it out a little more. Maybe burn the over exposed corn bits? I like the warm colors in background.   Posted: 02/11/2025 21:14:12

Very nice image Don. Agree with Leslie's comments, plus I might crop a little off the left side. Your image has a good story and you certainly stoped it at the peak of action. Feather pattern and leg up are super. I also really like the background..   Posted: 02/14/2025 23:49:50

What a whimsical capture! This shot makes me smile. I agree with Leslie and Tom's comments. I like the detail in the feathers and the bird looks sharp to me, maybe a bit too soft. A little contrast adjustment of the bird itself might make a difference. I really like the color of the background, branches are a bit distracting to me, using the Lens Blur function in Lightroom might make a difference as wells. This is a fun photo to look at.   Posted: 02/15/2025 16:36:12

Great capture, I guess this was an image within a burst, Looks like the bird is just about to complete his landing an kicked up that seed by his eye.   Posted: 02/18/2025 02:17:33

I agree with the comments especially cropping if it is sharp enough. I think there would be more detail if flash were used.   Posted: 02/22/2025 04:14:30
