Young Kestrel by Ron Spencer

February 2025 - Young Kestrel

About the Image(s)

This is a young kestrel who glared at me with suspicion as I got closer for the shot. You can see his pinfeathers.

Sharpened and denoised in Topaz AI, accentuated the catchlights, made the sky blue in LR. 1/200, f 6 , ISO200, 357 mm

The feathers and colors are lovely. The baby is darling but not as sharp as it could be. Wiggly nest line is good. Because of the exposure the left eye looks lost in the white patch. Think you can fix that in PS if you want to.   Posted: 02/11/2025 21:20:21

Ron , I have never seen a young Kestrel. Great catch! Wish he was slightly sharper. Great eye to even find this young Kestrel. Well done.   Posted: 02/14/2025 23:54:45

Good job with your post processing bringing all the colors together nicely. The pose of the bird is perfect, and I like the composition and angle at which the shot was taken, makes for a very interesting photo. As mentioned, the feathers and face are a bit soft. 1/200 is a bit slow for the focal length you used, especially if hand holding the camera at that focal length. Increasing the shutter speed and f stop might have helped. Increasing ISO to accommodate the change in settings wouldn't have been a problem using Topaz to reduce grain. Regardless, enjoyable image to look at.   Posted: 02/18/2025 19:14:20

It is very soft. It might have been the denoise.   Posted: 02/22/2025 04:16:44
