Florida Scrub Jay by Don Poulton

January 2025 - Florida Scrub Jay

About the Image(s)

It's now been almost seven years since I've made it to Florida but on my last visit, I visited the Lyonia Preserve, which is one of the very few habitats left where the Florida Scrub Jay can be found. I shot using my Canon 7D Mark II and 100-400 lens set at 340mm, 1/640 at f/8. I made minor adjustments in Lightroom, sharpened in Topaz Sharpen AI, and cropped to a square.

Don, we are heading down that way in about two weeks. We are going to Orlando Wetlands then onto Merritt Island National Refuge. This is an excellent image of a Scrub Jay. Your image is tack sharp and colors are right on. Love the turn of the head and the intense alertness of the bird.   Posted: 01/09/2025 13:55:55

Thanks Tom, and good luck in your trip. Lyonia Preserve is not far from I-4 about halfway between Orlando and Daytona Beach.   Posted: 01/09/2025 16:06:48

Yes, very good portrayal of the jay...you even got the catch light in the eye. Colors accurate and focus perfect.   Posted: 01/09/2025 16:52:26

Excellent photo. I would like to see the head lightened just a little.   Posted: 01/13/2025 00:47:31

Excellent capture. You might consider decreasing or otherwise changing the blue in the sky to accentuate the birds' blue feathers. I remember the first time I saw a Scrub jay in the bright morning light; the bird's blue was actually somehow beautifully "different".   Posted: 01/14/2025 01:53:37

Don, we have blue-Jays where I live and never knew a scrub-Jay bird existed before seeing your image. I did a little research and was surprised to learn of the similarities between the two birds.
This is a very nice shot. Very sharp image of the entire bird with great detail in the feathers against a nice blue sky. Great catch-light in the eye. I like the pose of the bird which goes well with the branch. Very nice photo.
