The Fishmonger by Norm Solomon

January 2025 - The Fishmonger

About the Image(s)

I took this photo on a fall trip to Catania,Sicily (a great place to visit!). The open air fish market there only has hours in the morning making it imperative for me to get out there early! It is a busy place so I had to be quick with my composition and focusing. I wanted to provide a sense of what the market was like and I thought that the attached scene of the fishmonger at his stall captured that sense. I could have cropped out the second fishmonger in the back but decided to leave him in because I thought it enhanced the `authenticity’ of the photo. As you can see it looks like the subject fishmonger really knows his business

Hi Norm,
This is an astounding picture with an interesting subject. His stance and facial expression convey a strong personality. What is he thinking? Is he tired? I like how you've placed him in the center. The inclusion of the other guy, while it gives context to the scene, also adds depth to the storytelling. I wonder, though, if not including him will get the viewer's focus solely on the subject. Overall, this is excellent work!   Posted: 01/13/2025 20:53:35

I really like this. The fish scraps in bottom left add to the open,just-caught nature of these markets. Is he mad at a customer who walked away? Has a competitor given offense?
The helper shows it wasn't staged. The scale indicates that there is a legitimacy to the enterprise.   Posted: 01/15/2025 02:57:19

Would you really want to purchase some fish with the fishmonger standing over his wares smoking. A great little story, I like the way you have included some of his produce   Posted: 01/17/2025 09:50:00

Norm - you have captured " one tough hombre ". You would be afraid not to buy his fish. The subdued lighting allowed you to capture all details - like his sweaty shirt, et al. Great "street" shot.   Posted: 01/20/2025 16:39:02
