Dismal Swamp by Adi Ben-Senior

December 2024 - Dismal Swamp

About the Image(s)

I wanted to visit the place for some time and finally I had the chance last month. Interesting - yes but not so much. Only 4 trees and one access point on a pier. So I came early in the morning, went in the water, set up the tripod and tried making lemonade from the lemons. This is the third version and latest in that morning. I took it against the sun to create a silhouette. Edit: I cropped a bit ( 5%) from the bottom. This picture is posted in different variations in all 3 groups I attend: 83, 36, 19Nikon z9 ; 24-120 mm f4 zoom @f11 ; S 1/2000 ; 200 iso ; Aperture Priority ; tripod

Hi Adi,
This to me is a very creative use of a black & white treatment in a landscape.
I like the way you captured the sun hitting the tree.
Some thoughts for your consideration for future similar images-consider shooting at an even wider angle @ F16 and trying for a sunburst. For this particular image it might be interesting to crop at the waterline and eliminate the reflection entirely & see how you feel about it. Also, for this image perhaps lighten what appears (?) to be an inverted `V' vignette in the upper half of the image...yes it does draw my eye to the sun but the vignette, at least to me, doesn't seem realistic .

I like the concept and I think monochrome is a good choice. I often use a vignette in mono images just to hold the corners, this goes quite a bit further and becomes part of the composition. Do I like that? Well the simple answer is yes in this instance.   Posted: 12/15/2024 13:48:13

Hi Adi,
Black and white is appropriate for this photo as it emphasizes the shape of tree and the reflection. Putting the tree in the center works here. Well done!   Posted: 12/22/2024 00:07:54
