Round Tower by John Hackett

December 2025 - Round Tower

About the Image(s)

A round pencil like tower in Killala, County Mayo, Ireland.
Access around the tower was quite tight and so I took the picture looking up to exaggerate the perspective. I also included the street lamp to add a bit of interest and scale.
It was also a brief moment of light on a stormy day. I believe a number of these towers exist in Ireland.

Very interesting image. My first reaction was the tower isn't vertical, but on second viewing I decided I like it. It acts like a leading line from the corner up into the dramatic sky. Curious that the lamp post isn't leaning as well. The image is sharp, excellent conversion to monochrome using the full range of tones (almost, no pure whites, but that is as it should be). Hello John,
Great stormy day, the dark clouds seems are holding the tower giving balance to your composition with a very interesting result.   Posted: 12/12/2025 05:01:27

Wow, this image reminds me of the mosques I saw in Israel. The texture and sharpness of the tower, contrasted with the cloudy sky, adds interest and leads your eye to the top of the photo. The light looks a little soft to me. For me, and this is something I struggle with, I like to see straight lines in buildings. I would consider either straightening the tower of the light. Just a thought.   Posted: 12/13/2025 15:14:15
