Cholula's Temple by Carlos Roman

April 2025 - Cholula's Temple

About the Image(s)

I took this picture with my smartphone while visiting the state of Puebla in Mexico. It is a catholic temple (our “Lady of the Remedies”) constructed on the top of an old pyramid by the Spanish conquerors in the region of Cholula. The basement of the pyramid measures almost 1,500 ft on each side, being the largest in the world. The temple rises 180 ft above the surrounding plain. The pyramid was built around the year 300 b.c. and it was dedicated to Quetzalcoatl, the god who created humankind according to the indigenous culture.

Subject is interesting and I'm always amazed at how well pictures turn out from our phone. I would adjust the cropping to remove some of the foreground greenery and offset the church slightly. Maybe it's a preference, but I tend not to place the subject in the center of the frame. If you're afraid to punch up the colors it would make the church stand out more.   Posted: 04/14/2025 20:58:56

Your point of view shows the church well and the location.I would agree with Suzanne about a possible crop. However you picture does show well the tortuous climb for the people to attend the church.   Posted: 04/18/2025 10:29:11

I like the triangular composition of your image, what an interesting fact of this church build on top of the Pyramids. Thanks for sharing with us this beautiful place.   Posted: 04/20/2025 05:28:25

A very nice documentary photo of the Temple. Sometimes the phone camera handles this type of scene as well, if not better than the big camera. My suggestion for cropping is in from the right and left to add emphasis to the temple. I like the inclusion of the stairs which gives context to the scene.   Posted: 04/20/2025 18:16:06
