Scarlet Macaw by Glenn Rudd

January 2025 - Scarlet Macaw

About the Image(s)

This image was taken during my Ecuador Photo Workshop in 2020 near our camp on the Amazon River. These birds were visiting a favorite feeding venue which contains minerals in clay deposits essential to their good health. I love the brilliant colors and behavior antics of these beautiful birds.
Technical: 1/320sec, f/6.3, ISO 3200, 550mm, Flash.

Great portrait of the birds, it looks like they are having a nice chat, very vibrant colours, can you give more detail of the flash you use, how far you were?

Good picture, you capture the vivid colors of the birds very well. Probably the grass at the top is a bit distracting, trying to remove or obscure it in post-edition would help to focus more on the macaws.   Posted: 01/12/2025 23:36:43

A small group of macaws passing the time of day. A good group portrait, a good pose by the birds and well taken.   Posted: 01/17/2025 09:38:27

I love this image and would love to know what photo group you were with. I plan to go to Costa Rica in April to shoot birds and any helpful hints are appreciated - as Martha mentioned, what flash did you use? Any post processing? They do look like they are chatting it up. The feathers seem a little soft in the chest area, but the contrast with the background really make these beautiful creatures stand out.   Posted: 01/17/2025 11:44:02

The birds are very colorful in the photo. They definitely attract my eye to them. Considering you used a flash it's great to see they didn't try to turn their heads to you in the photo. Well done.   Posted: 01/18/2025 21:14:00

I like the colorful birds giving us "the eye". The bright clay (?) the birds are standing on takes attention away from the birds - perhaps decrease its brightness. The shadows on the birds are very "inky" - perhaps bring out some detail in those areas.   Posted: 01/21/2025 04:53:46
