“The Day Dreamer" by Martha Aguero

December 2024 - “The Day Dreamer"

About the Image(s)

My photo for this month is the result of merging 2 images:
I took these pictures almost at the same, on November 23 of this year, in the deck of a Pub with the view of the Bay at " Maple Bay" in the Cowichan Valley in Vancouver Island, BC, then I turned around and there was this person looking at the bay with a day-dreaming face, I took the shot of him, and decided to merge both images into one. I edited in Camera raw independently, with basic editing, then in Photoshop I added the layer into the main subject, using screen blending mode.

My camera is a Sony RX 10IV (a bridge camera)

The settings for “The Day Dreamer”, were ISO 1000 ; 9-220 @ 102 mm; f/4 at 1/250
“The View” ISO 1000 9-220 @ 21 mm; f/7.1; at 1/320

Any comments and critiques more than welcome.

Nicely done Martha. The image has a nice abstract dreamy impact and tells a story of the man pondering the scene. It does look a little "noisy" which can be easily fixed.   Posted: 12/11/2024 22:28:29

Thanks Glenn, on purpose I added the noise to create a more moody effect, but I will try to lower it just to see the difference.   Posted: 12/13/2024 08:58:01

I like the subject(s), the composition, and applaud how you combined them. There are a lot of things that could be done differently - noise, contrast, etc. But for this type of image especially, its all a matter of taste - and as the creator, yours counts most. If you like it - its good.   Posted: 12/12/2024 03:01:00

Thanks Sheldon, I have a new version with your suggestions, a little bit less noise and more contrast. In PS,I am using the view image on the top layer using screen blending mode, and I just reduce its opacity, and reduce the noise in camera raw.   Posted: 12/13/2024 09:08:26

Thanks Joe. After watching many times both of the images, I think I like more this last version, I think his face and expression pop up a little more.   Posted: 12/15/2024 19:24:30

I like the idea behind this picture. The way the images have been combined gives the dreamy impression, although for my taste it is a touch dark, but that may be the effect you wished to convey. Your version with reduced noise and boosted contrast appeals to me more. The fact that they are taken at the same location and time gives it more meaning in my view.   Posted: 12/15/2024 11:03:33
