About the Image(s)

Last summer, I visited The Grand Tetons for the first time. This is Mt. Moran shot from Oxbow Bend. What caught my eye was the mist near the base which turned out to be pollen. Thick clouds of pollen were blowing everywhere in the wind. I liked the reflection of the mountain.

I converted to B&W with NIK Silver Effex, removed a tree and did some other cleanup. I softened the ripples in the water, applied Topaz denoise and used Curves to give some depth to the trees which had pollen blowing through them.

My camera is an Olympus mirrorless with a Lumix G Vario lens. This was a handheld shot at f/11 at 1/160 with ISO 200.

A wonderful image. Great composition. A minor suggestion is to slightly increase the contrast.   Posted: 09/11/2023 14:32:46

Thanks, Jim. I played a lot with contrast, but was concerned that the trees would get too dark.   Posted: 09/13/2023 17:40:43

Hi Darlene
The lighting on the Mt Moran is spectacular in this image in real life it must have been breathtaking, the darker foreground really makes it pop even more,I just wondered if a letterbox crop might just bring it forward a little more.   Posted: 09/11/2023 14:35:46

Thanks Ian. I was trying to keep the tree reflections, but I DO like the letterbox cropping. It puts more focus on the mountain.   Posted: 09/13/2023 17:42:58

Welcome to the group, Darlene. I love this image! It's beautifully composed and works very well in monochrome. My wife and I are heading to the Tetons in December so I'm always eager to see what others find there.   Posted: 09/11/2023 16:11:41

Thank you for the welcome, Henry. Lucky you to go there in winter! If weather permits, the morning skies reflected in water can be spectacular! I look forward to seeing your images.   Posted: 09/13/2023 17:45:48

Hi Darlene. As Henry says, welcome to the group.

Great image that you captured. I find it is always a challenge on cropping and many times relates to how it is displayed to the judges. I am finding more acceptance of the 1920x1080px aspect ratio, so am using that whereever possible. Sometimes we have to shoot wider to allow more crop room when we want to save certain parts of an image.
