About the Image(s)

This image was taken in July of this year while walking through Arles, France. I was particularly interested in photographing street scenes and people while my wife and I were on this trip. It was morning and I noticed this lady sitting at an outdoor caf?© having a morning drink. She seemed to be deep in thought and I immediately thought I’d like to capture this moment. Since we were with a tour group I didn’t have much time to think about composition and the other technical elements I might normally do if I had the time. I kept my camera set at f/8, and Auto ISO as we walked through the town. So, all I really had to do was compose with the zoom lens, focus, and shoot.
I processed the image in Photoshop. I cropped a bit, optimized the exposure and color, and I removed the part of the table pedestal under the table, and I removed the awning crank handle on the wall behind the woman. I also removed the white item on the downspout. I straightened the image a bit, converted it to monochrome in NIK Silver Efex, sharpened, and applied a vignette back in Photoshop.
I used my Nikon Z8 with a Nikon 24-120mm lens at f/8, 1/80 sec, and the Auto ISO was 800. (Incidentally, during the entire 12 days in France and a couple of thousand shots, I only used the 24-120mm lens. I had a 70-300 with me, but never used it. Needless to say, the 24-120 is my favorite lens.)

Hi Charles: A very good story telling street scene with the elderly lady and her dog.

You have tightened up the composition by cropping in and removing distractions. There is a black object at the right side of the frame at ground level, I would consider cloning this item out. Do not think you can crop it out as the dog would be too close to the edge of the frame.

This street scene converted to monochrome very well, and thanks for sharing.

I also have the Nikon G series 24-120mm lens I use a lot, an excellent lens.

Thanks, Murphy. I think the Remove tool in Photoshop will be able to remove it.   Posted: 10/08/2026 13:38:22
