About the Image(s)
Description: Something a little different this month as I enjoy photographing wildlife/birds. While at Bombay Hook in 2023, a number of Snowy Egrets were perched in a dead tree exhibiting all kinds of behaviors. This is just one image of a sequence showing preening of feathers by one of these Egrets. It was processed using very basic B&W adjustments in LR. I Shot it with a Nikon D500, 1/2500 shutter speed at F-6.3 with a Nikor 500mm lens.

Great composition, sharp subject. I love the high key treatment.   Posted: 07/08/2026 20:03:05
Thanks Sheldon. Not too many wildlife shots lend themselves to high key so I was pleased to see the possibilities.   Posted: 07/11/2026 12:20:00
Hi Ed: Very artistically done, that knurled tree branch was the perfect prop.
A good story telling picture showing the bird preening, seems like a bird activity not much photographed.
Great image in all ways.   Posted: 07/09/2026 14:51:17

Hey Murphy, thank you. I was fortunate in capturing the behavior. The benefit of a high FPS. And the fact of the tree as a composition element really helped.   Posted: 07/11/2026 12:21:57
Ed,
Lovely portrait of a beautiful bird. We don't get many egrets up our way so I always appreciate a good image of one. High key was an excellent choice here. The bird is sharp with good detail, though it is a bit hot on its back. The perch works almost as an extension of the bird providing a nice "Y" composition.
I need to take a look at my own bird pictures with an eye toward rendering them in monochrome.   Posted: 07/11/2026 18:38:08

Thanks Henry. Yes, photographing white birds is always challenging. I usually do some under exposure on a bird such as this but sometimes you just don't get everything. Doing wildlife in mono is challenging...   Posted: 07/12/2026 12:01:42
