MAKER'S COMMENTS: Last month I submitted a picture of a circular stairway looking straight down several stories from the main level to the basement level. This picture is photographed from the basement level looking straight up a few stores to the cupola on the roof. We are viewing the bottom side of the circular stairway.
I am sharing the original in a vertical format. It would be very interesting to me to know which format you prefer.

Hi Murphy-I prefer the landscape crop that you did over the vertical presentation. Fo me, it has more impact. My only suggestion would be to try for more contrast.   Posted: 04/10/2026 20:42:31
Thanks Charlie for your thoughts on horizontal vs. vertical format. I will rework this picture adding a little more contrast.   Posted: 04/10/2026 23:27:16
Murphy,
Another winner from this location! I like both compositions, but I think I do prefer the vertical original. Not sure I can articulate why, but it seems to work for me.
I can see I'm going to have to find an excuse to get down to the UW Hospital sometime soon.   Posted: 04/13/2026 17:48:56

Hey Murphy, another vote for the original composition. I think it is very dynamic and the shapes and light take your eye up into the top window than back...The horizontal crop seems less so because you give more visual weight to the window than the nice swirls leading into it as you have in the original. Another way to articulate this is the original crop engages the viewer better. And it would pop if done in black and white...   Posted: 04/13/2026 21:02:13
I also favor the original composition, but I would crop a little up from the bottom to turn the lower part of the swirl into a leading line, and move the cupola closer to the center.   Posted: 04/15/2026 23:34:22
