About the Image(s)

My family and I visited Tromso in January last year. I took this photo during a tour stop. Tromso during the polar night and deep freeze is beautiful. I decided to turn this into black and white, and enhanced the contrast. I also decided to do a tighter crop to show the road. I couldn't decide whether to keep the cars on the left side or not. In the end I left them there to make the road obvious. I enhanced the lights coming from the car that's traveling to the right.

Nenette- What draws me to your image is how your composition shows the mountains in layers: the part in front of the road, the triangular part of the mountain behind the road, and the mountain in the rear. I do think the snow needs to be whiter. I don't know how you processed the image, but I think if you desaturated the blue from the original color image then make the mono conversion the snow might become whiter. I'll bet that was a great trip.   Posted: 04/10/2026 20:55:58

Hi Nenette: I prefer the composition in your original vs. the crop in the monochrome conversion. The 3 smaller mountains at the right in your original provide a nice balance to the two larger mountains to the left, along with more lake in the scene. I would clone out the buildings in the lower right corner.

Regarding the two cars on the left; I am kind of optional on the cars, however they provide points of interest on the road.

Hi Nenette,
Interesting scene. We'll be traveling there in August so we won't see the arctic conditions but I'm eager to see the landscapes.
I think I have to agree with Murphy about the original composition. Those three distant peaks are awfully compelling. I would still crop the sky the way you did to create a panoramic composition. I like the two cars.   Posted: 04/13/2026 17:59:15

Hey Nenette, I agree with the others in that the original composition has some key features that really balance the left side of the image. Cars are fine, but remove buildings and yes, the snow contrast is a little off. I like the comment from Charles on the desaturate...   Posted: 04/13/2026 21:12:08

Nenette, I also prefer the original composition. I think the cars add to the image - leave them in. A lot of the shadow areas are blocked, you can see more detail in the trees in the color version. There also is a bit of a halo at the top edge between mountains and sky.   Posted: 04/15/2026 23:40:01
