About the Image(s)

While walking through the open air market in Lima Peru in 2009, I captured this image of a poor woman selling tortilla who fell asleep in the afternoon air, probably after arising predawn to make her fresh wares for the hungry workers. The bright colors of her clothes against the brilliant blue wall caught my attention and ‘made’ me want to capture the scene. I always wondered what a B&W image of the scene would compare to the color image. This month I decided to find out.

Captured with a Canon 40D and Canon EFS 17-85mm lens at 33mm and 1/5 sec at f/14 and ISO 1600 in a dark passageway. Processed in LR with cropping and standard exposure adjustments, sharping and noise reduction for the color version. Converted to B&W in LR with the standard profiles and some dodging and burning.

Does it compare with the color?

I like this image a lot. Great human interest and great composition. I suggest you consider cloning out the railing above the woman's head. To me it is a big distraction. I like both the color and mono versions.   Posted: 12/19/2024 01:36:32

Jim,
I really like this image. You found a terrific composition that lends itself to a number of different possibilities.
I will admit to preferring the color version, though I like the way the BW version is cropped. I do agree with Jim about getting rid of the rail. In fact if you were to do that, you could probably preserve the overall geometry of the image which I like better.
