About the Image(s)

I was visiting my home in New York City last month. As a native New Yorker I just discovered the Chelsea wholesale flower district. There are flowers everywhere covering entire city streets, leaving only a walking pathway, in front of floral shops. Aromatic floral scents throughout the air. Quite a surprise! Chelsea is largely known for its shopping and art galleries. The world famous B & H camera shop is also near by.

This image is of a young lady inside a flower shop. It caught my eye because her
afro was the same color and shape of some of the flowers. To bring out the colors and detail I used basic Lightroom edits of adjusting sliders for tone, slight increase in clarity & dehaze and adjusted color sliders. I also added a mask for her hair to increase definition without defining the flowers. For some reason my imaging were bluish???? I tried to adjust ISO and WB but it didn’t work so I corrected it in post editing with the temperature slider. I no doubt spent too much time on this block!! Sadly hotels are sprouting up slowly replacing the flower district.

Yvonne, I really had to chuckle when first looking at this image. As you said, the similarity between the shapes and colors of the background flower blossoms to the woman's hair makes for a great interesting shot. Adjustments made in post processing compared to the original are done well too.   Posted: 09/10/2023 07:49:09

I love the colors in this photo! While I understand why you cropped like you did, it looks like she is walking out of the photo, I think if she had been more to the right of the photo walking into the shot it would be better.   Posted: 09/13/2023 11:34:07

You're right! I gotta figure out how to vertically flip just the subject. Thank you .   Posted: 09/13/2023 11:52:42

I like the crop with the subject being to the left and her being a little soft, it gives the allusion of the lady being in a hurry (In my mind). I love the colorful flowers, nice and sharp. Very nice.   Posted: 09/17/2023 10:40:34

Gorgeous photo! I love that her mouth is open - either talking, singing, or ready to take a bite out of the bloom in front of her! I'm in NYC as I write this and will be down at Chelsea tomorrow morning - I might look for the flower shop!   Posted: 09/19/2023 10:28:46

This is just a suggestion. I hope it's ok for you.
I increased the midtones just a little bit and filled in the upper left corner.

I welcome all suggestions. The dialogues are a valuable learning tool...allowing you to view your images through others...fresh eyes and different perspectives.

I downloaded your edits to compare images side by side. The midtones add a brightness to the photo . And I didn't even notice the corner. BTY, how exactly did you increase the midtones. Thank you again for your comments.   Posted: 09/20/2023 13:17:20

Hi Yvonne, Your vivid description of your visit to the Chelsea flower district in New York City is truly enchanting. The image you paint of streets blanketed in flowers and the delicate scent of blooms in the air is beautifully captured. Your photograph featuring the young lady with an afro that perfectly matches the surrounding flowers is an exquisite discovery. Your adept use of Lightroom has skillfully enhanced the colors and details, showcasing your editing finesse. Personally, I tend to favor compositions where the subject occupies about one-third of the frame, leaving the remaining two-thirds for the background. Nonetheless, your image is a testament to the district's enduring beauty, and it evokes fond memories of my own visits to Chelsea!   Posted: 09/20/2023 15:20:16

One third of the frame is interesting? Hearing different comments on member photos opens your eyes to other options. Also, I hear hotels are slowly taking over the flower district. Soon to become "hotel row." Thank you for your comments.   Posted: 09/20/2023 15:28:44
