August 2026 - After the Storm

I have been revisiting some of my older photos to see what I can do with them with newer software. I started this photo with some basic edits with the Nikon software, NX Studio. These corrections were basically to adjust color and contrast of the overall scene. The white balance of the original photo seemed to be a bit off and I was able to bring it closer to what I wanted with this software. With these edits, I saved the photo as a tiff file and finished edits in Affinity Photo. Finally, I cropped the final image into a 16:9 aspect ratio.
Overall, I thought this was an interesting experiment for me. I had never really started editing of a photo in the Nikon software and completing it in something else. I will try this again on other photos from my Nikon cameras. Maybe practice will make perfect. I will also try this with Fuji software with my Fuji files in the future.
For this photo, I used my Nikon D300s with a 16-85mm lens at 85mm, f/8, 1/15th sec, ISO 200.

After the storm, everything calms down, and a rainbow makes the scene truly special. The light comes from the left, casting wonderful shadows across the landscape, making the field glow golden. Rainbows aren't exactly common, and this interrupted one is truly breathtaking. "Wait a minute," you think, "where's the rest of the arc?" Then I see the "remnants" of the arc on the left and can mentally picture the landscape with the rainbow in its entirety.
I believe that not everything needs to be visible. As in this case, your imagination comes in handy.
I think your crop is very well suited to the landscape.
Overall, I slightly desaturated the green using the Hue/Saturation adjustment and darkened the blue a bit.

I only made two changes -- I tweaked the straightening of the green lawn and also removed an antennae (I think that's what it is...).

Just to fantasize a bit, After the Storm reminds me of the Wizard of Oz when Dorothy is on her way to Emerald City.

I included a copy of the image straight out of the camera. The colors of the image were way off and I worked on it to get it looking more natural. I may remove some of the manmade elements in this photo as I continue tweaking it. Posted: 08/15/2026 21:13:43
