About the Image(s)

Here’s my photo for July which was also taken at Longwood Gardens. I attempted to capture the water in midair and also to eliminate as many distractions as I could. I added the original photo for reference.

Douglas,
This is very pretty. The purples of the flowers are lush and play nicely against the green hedges. I also like the symmetry
and structure. The foreground flowers the fountain to the background wall, then the distant lawn give a nice sense of depth.

Douglas,
Overall, a very nice image. Good symmetry and good color. I do think the top third of the image is a distraction since it's out of focus. It's a much better image when cropped at 4x5.   Posted: 07/03/2026 18:29:01

Wow -- yes -- the 4X5 is a terrific improvement!

(at least this image is level!)

You're welcome! Thanks for letting me play with your image.

In addition to the crop, I applied a bit of vignette to the top and bottom ... increased the clarity of the fountain ... straightened the image ... and upped the saturation of the flowers a touch. Nothing major.   Posted: 07/03/2026 20:49:36

Douglas, I wish I were there right now. We're having the hottest summer in years here in Germany, and the thought of sitting on a bench in the shade there, enjoying a gentle spray from the fountain, is refreshing. I really like the symmetry, the colors, the whole atmosphere of the picture. The fresh green with the purple flowers
immediately caught my eye. If you follow the fountain, you'll also notice that the uppermost jet is almost centered between the flowerpots. A great vantage point and perfectly timed. (By the way - how wonderful that the flowers in the pots are the same color as the surrounding plants!)
I like Bruce's 5x4 crop, and I also like your square crop.
That's why I stuck with the square crop and just made it a bit narrower.
The rule of thirds can now be applied perfectly: one-third water basin, one-third hedge, and one-third background, connected by the fountain.
I'm curious to know if you like my suggestion.   Posted: 07/09/2026 14:43:40

Love the thirds -- really helps the photo!

Douglas, Lovely setting. I see the repeating lines throughout the image with the hedges, pool fountain perimeter and walkway. The light hits the green landscape and purple flowers nicely. The blue sky was distracting, but the groups' crop suggestions removed it. Btw, nice job in removing the guy.

I see why Longwood Gardens is a favorite spot for you!   Posted: 07/10/2026 12:59:20

Douglas, you've captured another peaceful scene. What a great place to take photos. I like the symmetry of the image. The purples and greens really enhance the peacefulness of the scene. Removing the man in the image does make it better, but when I first looked at the original image, his being there really made clear the scale of the fountain and hedges. I didn't realize how large they were initially.

I like Sabine's and Bruce's crop ideas as they better put the focus on the fountain and its surroundings.   Posted: 07/10/2026 21:21:33
