The Maverick by Linda Mui

April 2026 - The Maverick

About the Image(s)

A study in individuality and vibrant contrast captured in the expansive flower fields of North Holland. Amidst a sea of uniform white blooms, a single bicolor tulip asserts its bold presence. The soft, diffused light of a spring morning highlights the delicate textures of the petals, creating a poetic balance between the singular and the many.

I wanted to share one final perspective from my time in the tulip fields. While the vast white field and the windmill create a beautiful, classic pattern (as seen here), it was this single red tulip that truly arrested my attention.
In a field of thousands, this 'lone soloist' stood out so vibrantly. I was fascinated by how it completely broke the visual rhythm of the white tulips. When I got closer for the second shot, the detail of the dew on the petals made it feel even more like a character with its own story to tell.
It's a great reminder for me as I move toward street photography: even in a crowded, uniform environment, there is always one singular detail or 'decisive moment' waiting to be captured if we look closely enough.
I look forward to seeing everyone's work in the general galleries! - Linda Mui (Moving to Group 58).   Posted: 04/03/2026 13:22:30

So glad you gave the "outlier" the attention it deserves. In a simpler sense, I was reminder of the "Where's Waldo" books -- the one red one is a veritable sea of white blossoms!

Looking forward to enjoying your photos in 58!

Douglas, I love the "Where's Waldo" comparison-that is exactly the feeling I was going for! Thank you so much for your kind words and support. I've really enjoyed our time in Group 9 and look forward to catching up with your work in the general galleries while I dive into Group 58. See you there!   Posted: 04/04/2026 18:35:05

Hi Linda, The second photo put a smile on my face. Individuality makes life interesting and the tulip asserting his bold presence is a good metaphor. Maverick is also stunning capturing the delicate petals with dew. Camera phones are amazing.

Sounds like you're a fan of Henri Cartier-Bresson's decisive moment . See you in the general galleries! Have fun!   Posted: 04/11/2026 15:00:29

Yvonne,
Thank you so much! I'm so glad the red tulip brought a smile to your face-I love the idea of it being a "bold presence." It was a fun challenge to capture that and the delicate dew on the Maverick.
I'm flattered by the mention of Cartier-Bresson! That "decisive moment" is exactly what I'm hoping to explore more of in Group 58. I've really enjoyed our time together in Group 9 and will definitely see you in the general galleries!

Linda,
This is a beautiful photograph! I love tulips and the red surrounded by white really pops. Reminds me of the quote: In a world full of copies, be an original.

as for the original, I love the whole scene with the windmill in the background. It really hits home that the red tulip is doing its own thing, but just a gorgeous as her neighbors.

I will miss you in this group, especially your commentary - you have a great way with words. I will look for you on IG, so I hope that you post a lot! And please let us know what PID group you are moving too. Feel free to come back here and visit us!

Sylvia,
Thank you so much for your kind words! I love that quote-it's exactly what I was hoping to convey with that lone red tulip. I will certainly miss our interactions in this group as well!
To answer your question, I've just transferred over to Group 58 for Street Photography. I'm actually in France right now for a three-week trip, so I'm really excited to dive into that "decisive moment" style here! I'll definitely be posting my highlights on IG, so I look forward to staying connected there. Please do keep in touch!

Linda, this is a nice image of a single red flower in a sea of white, kind of a portrait of it. I think this photo goes nicely with the overall image of the field of flowers and windmill. The overall photo shows the context and the single photo highlights the individuality of the red flower. I can see these two images would fit well in a diptych. Very nice.

I am sorry that you will be leaving this group, you always have such expressive commentary on photos of the group members which I appreciate. Enjoy your time in the new group and I will continue to check out the photos you submit there.   Posted: 04/17/2026 16:51:46

Linda, I think both the original and this portrait are nice photos, each telling a story of their own. I like how the morning dew on the Mavericks petals, stem and leaf diffuses the morning light creating a soft velvet like texture. I can almost feel the softness. Very nice image.   Posted: 04/17/2026 20:08:57
