About the Image(s)

I decided to practice my macro photography on dewdrops found on the leaves of my wife’s Hosta plants. The early morning sunlight was very bright, so I underexposed this image by 1 & 1/3 stops to reduce blown-out highlights. A small aperture setting was used to gain as much depth-of-field of the leaf from edge to edge in the area of the three dewdrops. This small aperture also created the sunburst on one of the dewdrops.
Small adjustment in Topaz denoise which also resulted in a slightly sharpened the image. Minor adjustments in Lightrooms Basic module. Used lightrooms Texture and Clarity adjustments to blur/soften the background. Minor Color Grading adjustments. Applied a mask to the leaf to slightly increase exposure, highlights, and temperature. Slightly darken parts of the image with two linear gradient masks, one starting from the bottom of the image to the dew drop and then another from the upper right corner diagonally towards the center of the image just a short distance. Cropped the image using the golden spiral. I worked on this image over a few days and I’m sure if I look at this image again tomorrow, I’ll be tempted to make further adjustments. Comments, recommendations are always welcomed.
Full frame camera body on a tripod with shutter release cable. 180mm macro lens with a 1.4x multiplier set at 252mm, f/22, 1/25 sec, ISO 800.

Very well done! Gorgeous image. I need to remember to look at my photo details in the future. I have been trying to 'nitpick' or find something I might do different with everyone's photos - but I can think of nothing else to try. This is photography goals - the starburst on the water droplet - wow.

thank you so much for sharing your process. I never think of things like underexposing my image to reduce blown out highlights or using much of the stuff you did in post. I need to remember these things!   Posted: 07/09/2025 20:15:48

Thank you for your kind words Sylvia. I'm glad the information I share is helpful to you. Honestly, I play around with the tools in Lightroom Classic hoping for the best and never being fully satisfied with the final results. This particular image was challenging to create enough detail separation within all the green. Like I said, each time I look at this, I'm tempted to make further adjustments.   Posted: 07/09/2025 23:06:18

My first impression of this image - before reading anything - was how refreshing and calming it feels. The lush green tones create such a peaceful mood, and the dewdrops are like tiny diamonds, sparkling with a kind of magical energy. That sunburst in one of the drops adds a beautiful touch of brilliance - it feels almost like nature's own jewel.

Jim, your creativity in capturing this moment is truly inspiring. It's fascinating to read about all the care and intention you put into your camera settings and post-processing - there's such a quiet precision in the result. I'm still learning and exploring these editing tools myself, so seeing how you used techniques like the golden spiral crop and local masking gives me a lot to think about.

This image feels both natural and polished - a perfect blend of technical skill and artistic sensitivity. Beautifully done!   Posted: 07/10/2025 11:48:51

Thank you for your kind words Linda, much appreciated. Like you, I'm still learning Lightroom editing tools, just not quick enough. Thanks again.   Posted: 07/11/2025 01:51:43

Your sense of composition is excellent in this photo. You place the end of the leaf in an arrow at the upper right and let it gracefully fall down and to the left. It's very, very pleasing to the eye and completely draws me in and rewards my gaze with the dazzling dew drop at the end!   Posted: 07/12/2025 20:23:39

Jim, Wow...such detail! With my first look at Dew Drops, Peter Pan's Tinker Bell came to mind. A Disney magical moment. The starburst in the water drop and detail of the leaf is amazing. I'll have to review your instructions again to grasp all the steps. Thank you for sharing.   Posted: 07/14/2025 21:50:48

Thank you Yvonne. I did perform all the task as described in my post processing instruction but may not have been in the exact order as listed. Steps/rework performed was done at multiple sittings which I didn't write down, so I'm relying on memory.   Posted: 07/15/2025 14:52:59

Jim, an image for me like something out of a fairy tale and I can't even explain it. In a moment, the fairy godmother comes, taps the dewdrop with her magic wand and says:
You have one wish. I look fascinated at the sun star, which sparkles like a diamond and.....
Enough of the fantasy.
The composition takes me from the top right to the dewdrop at the bottom. I look up again through the golden spiral cut, let my gaze wander along the leaf and come back to the sun star. This becomes even more sparkling due to the reflections behind it. The different shades of green support the calm, everything is focused on the drop.
Only one tiny detail disturbs me a little, the bright spot above the sparkling dewdrop. Probably also a dewdrop.
All in all, your days of hard work have more than paid off.
An image for a competition.   Posted: 07/16/2025 18:44:13

Thank you Sabine. I agree, the bright dewdrop is distracting. I debated during post processing whether to remove that one dewdrop or not, and now I'll revisit the image and experiment.   Posted: 07/17/2025 21:19:45

Jim, you have really done well with this photo. The composition of this works great. I think the edits you have done improved the image and provide that separation from the background. The light shining off the dewdrop really adds to it. Without the original photo, I would not know it was small crop of the original. You had a good eye seeing this composition.

I appreciate your description of the edits you have done. It is amazing the improvements to Lightroom. I have not upgraded my Lightroom software so I am still using Version 6 (before they went to a subscription). Though I still use Lightroom to edit my photos, I am transitioning to other software for my editing and learning what others do helps me try new ideas with my photos. Masking is such a powerful tool to use. Thanks for sharing.   Posted: 07/16/2025 23:05:01

Thank you Randy. I'm happy you found some value in my post processing description. it is challenging keeping up with all the changes photoshop and Lightroom make. I'm interested to read about the other software you are transitioning to, when submitting future images.   Posted: 07/17/2025 21:32:21
