About the Image(s)

A vacation in Austria means coming home with snow photos. But I didn't want to show the classic image with a blue sky and snow-covered mountains.
That's why I decided to convert my image to black and white using the BLACK & WHITE projects program from Franzis.
I then continued working in Photoshop, first with the High pass filter and then with the Hard Light filter.
Finally, I corrected the image with the Levels and Curves filter.
It was important to me to have a reduced black and white image as a result.
Structures should remain visible, a landscape shot should be recognizable.
I look forward to your comments. I would be pleased to receive tips for improvement.

Sabine, Before I comment could I possibly see the original? Welcome back!   Posted: 04/11/2025 17:18:22

Sabine, Thanks for uploading the original. After viewing the original , I can now see how the Franzis program edits details. Your image looks similar to a pencil sketch. At first glance I thought it was a little bright ...until I was able to appreciate the fine detailed lines. I also thought why not use photoshops cinema x-ray but that's an entirely different look. I tried below.

I did look up the Franzis program. I really like how your image resembles a pencil sketch. Thank you for sharing.

I'm envious of your travels and I'm resisting any "Sound of Music" references! The image is quite bright -- difficult for my eyes to focus on the structures. I found the utility towers on the upper left to be jarring, not in a bad way, just forced me to recognize how we've altered the landscape in the name of progress and technology.   Posted: 04/12/2025 13:15:50

Thanks for your comments, Doug. The image is already very bright, that's true and was intended. But you should be able to recognize structures, so I'll probably have to rework it.   Posted: 04/12/2025 14:07:31

Sabine, the post processing process you utilized certainly looked challenging and interesting. I had to research the BLACK & WHITE projects program to understand how that software was applied to your photo.
The detail is clearly seen with the dried grasses on the mountain sides, to the Power lines at the top of the mountain to the gulley at the bottom of the image. The Snowdrift in the gulley along with the roadway and avalanche guards are clearly visible. I like how well the sky is detailed. In terms of meeting your goal to reduce black & White in your image, I think you succeeded.

Jim, Thank you very much for the detailed description of my photo. The details in the sky were important to me, the soft clouds in contrast to the rather hard other structures.   Posted: 04/20/2025 08:24:17

Hi Sabine, I really admire your choice to convert this to black and white-it adds such a timeless, dramatic feel to the scene. The textures and structures are so well-defined, and the landscape is still easily recognizable. The way you've reduced the image to highlight those details is effective; it really enhances the mood of the shot.   Posted: 04/15/2025 05:45:35

I think you achieved your goals. I can easily see the structures.   Posted: 04/18/2025 18:37:13

Sabine, though you don't say it (and maybe it isn't), this looks to me like a high-key photo. I think what you have done here is an interesting approach to a snowy, mountain scene. The darker elements of the photo are clear, whereas the highlights are nearing or are total white.

The snowbank in the foreground has me a little distracted, though. It almost appears to be a snowed over road that leads into the valley below or the bank on the edge of the road, but I cannot be certain. Hope you enjoyed your trip. I'd like to get there someday.   Posted: 04/18/2025 22:02:47

Randy, Thank you so much for putting so much thought into my image. I wanted to try a different image processing and I think my intention has become quite clear.   Posted: 04/20/2025 08:39:29
