Grass at waters edge by Jim Overfield

December 2024 - Grass at waters edge

About the Image(s)

I was so busy creating this composition with the grass and its reflection in the water, that I nearly overlooked the sky and cloud reflection as well. I no longer have the original file and worked on a .tiff file completing the following tasks.

Cropped to a 1” format. Under the basic tab in Lightrooms development module, decreased highlights and blacks and slightly increased shadows and whites.
Under the color Mixer tab; Increased saturation and luminance of the green and blue colors.
Under Calibration tab; slightly Increased saturation of the red/green/blue primary colors.
Applied a slight dark Post crop Vignette.
There is not much color in this image so I experimented with various B&W conversions but always preferred my color image instead.
Handheld full frame camera body, 70-200mm lens at 200mm, ¼ sec, f/8, ISO 100, Aperture priority, spot metering.

Gorgeous shot. It has a vary calming effect. I love the the texture that the clouds and their reflections give. I can't actually tell if there is sky in your photo, or if it is all reflections.   Posted: 12/08/2024 16:45:03

Jim, I really like this shot. I like the symmetry of the grass and its reflection. It's a very surreal photo with no real sense of place, it just seems to be floating. And I like the square crop. I think you are right in keeping the color, the subtle green against the blue works with this photo. Very nice.   Posted: 12/13/2024 21:28:26

Thanks Randy. Correction to my story line; this photo was taken quite some time ago, and I cant remember for sure but I may, or may not have used a tripod.   Posted: 12/13/2024 21:42:06

Jim, Love the floating nature of your image. Part of the beauty is not being able to distinguish the sky from the water. Going with the color version was a good choice. Great image.   Posted: 12/13/2024 23:56:20

Jim, When I saw your image for the first time, I was impressed by the calmness it radiates. I like these reduced, simple motifs that work on their own. In your image, the viewer doesn't know whether the background is sky or a reflection, is there even a background?
But that's not important, looking at it and losing yourself in it is what your photo offers me. It seems light and weightless at the same time.
(Turned 180 degrees, your grass floats even more.) Well done!   Posted: 12/16/2024 19:16:07

Thank you Sabine for your comments and offering a different perspective, something I often forget to do myself.   Posted: 12/17/2024 13:09:45

Jim: Although I've seen similar images I've not seen any that were very striking; until this image of yours. I can't see a single thing I would change in this image. Everything about it works. Congrats!   Posted: 12/21/2024 21:24:05
